Not all of my dynamic group data is being backed up
To back up all data for a Microsoft 365 group, the Privileged Role Admin (PRA) or Global Admin (GA) service account used for the backup must be a member of the group.
For non-dynamic groups, Keepit automatically adds the admin as a member. However, dynamic groups function differently, as they use rules to determine membership. Because of this, Keepit cannot add the admin to a dynamic group automatically.
To ensure a complete backup, you must verify that the PRA or GA meets all the membership criteria applied to the group. This will allow the admin to be included as a member and ensure that all dynamic group data is backed up.
For more about dynamic membership, please refer to Microsoft's documentation.
What is backed up
The data that is backed up depends on whether PRA or GA is a member, owner, or neither.
If the PRA or GA is a member, the following will be backed up:
- All group data, including files, conversations, calendars, and plans
- The team's public and private channels, including the team's channel posts, wiki pages, and files
If the PRA or GA is an owner but not a member, the following will be backed up:
- All group data, except for plans
- The team's public and private channels, including the team's channel posts, wiki pages, and files
If the PRA or GA is neither a member nor an owner, the following will be backed up:
- All group data, except for plans
- Public channel data except for the team's channel posts
- Private channels will NOT be backed up
Notes
- After creating your connector and ensuring the service account is a member of dynamic groups, you can remove the PRA or GA role from the user.
- When restoring a dynamic group, it will be converted into a Microsoft 365 group with assigned membership.
