Restore OneDrive file versions

Keepit supports the backup and restore of OneDrive versions for all file types.

Backup configuration

By default, file versions are not backed up.

In the advanced settings of your backup configuration, you can enable version backup and choose to back up:

  • The most recent 10 versions
  • The most recent 100 versions
  • All versions

Important: Enabling version backup may impact backup performance.

Viewing and restoring versions

Backed-up file versions can be accessed in the Version History tab using the Versions Viewer Previewer.

You can recover your files in the following ways:

  • Restore an entire file including all versions
  • Restore only the most recent version of a file
  • Restore a previous version of a file
  • Restore a folder, choosing to:
  • Restore all versions of each file

  • Item Restore – Recover specific files or folders, with the option to restore either all versions or only the most recent version.

Versions limitations

Size limitation

We do not back up versions for large files. The GB limitation may vary, anywhere from around 2 GB or more.

Tracking major and minor versions

If both major and minor versions of library files are tracked, after a restore:

  • For major versions: the owner and modifier will be named "SharePoint app" and the timestamp will be the date of the restore. The retention label will not be restored.
  • For minor versions: the original owner, modifier, and timestamp will be restored. The retention label will be restored.

If only major versions of library files are tracked, after a restore:: the original owner, modifier, and timestamp will be restored. The retention label will be restored.

Restoring from root folder vs subfolder

Restoring a file from the OneDrive root folder:

  • If you restore only the most recent version, the original owner, modifier, and timestamp will be restored.
  • If you restore a previous version or all versions, the owner and modifier will be named "SharePoint app" and the timestamp will be the date of the restore.

Restoring a file from a subfolder:

  • The owner and modifier will be named "SharePoint app" and the timestamp will be the date of the restore.

Require check out of files

We cannot access files that require check out. To ensure that we can restore a file with its versions, we recommend disabling this function.

For details on how to turn off this function, see here.
